Most interior latex painting needs little more than ventilation and common sense, but sanding, solvent-based products and spraying raise the stakes. This page lists common protective gear and what each is for. It is general guidance, not medical or occupational advice, so read the manufacturer's safety data and instructions for each product you use.

Respirators only protect when they fit and when the cartridge matches the hazard. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for fit-testing, storage and cartridge replacement.

FAQ

Do I need a respirator for latex paint?
Usually good ventilation is enough for low-VOC latex paint indoors, but check the label. Use a respirator for sanding, spraying and solvent-based products.
What is the difference between an N95 and a half-mask respirator?
N95 masks filter particles like sanding dust. A half-mask with organic vapor cartridges also filters fumes from solvent-based paints.
How often should I replace cartridges?
Follow the manufacturer's guidance, and replace them if you smell fumes, breathing gets difficult or they have been used past their limit.
Can I reuse disposable gloves?
They are meant for single use. Replace them if torn or soaked with solvent.
