Painter's tape for sharp paint lines

Short answer: Pick tape by surface (standard for cured walls, delicate-surface tape for fresh paint), press the edge down firmly and pull it off at a shallow angle before the paint fully cures.

Sharp lines come from three things: the right tape for the surface, a sealed edge and good timing. Brand matters less than people think; surface condition and technique matter more. This page lists tapes to compare and the accessories that speed up masking.

Painter's tape is not the same as masking tape or duct tape. Masking tape can leave residue and bleed paint; duct tape is far too sticky for walls. If a roll does not say it is for painting, leave it on the shelf.

General-purpose blue and green tapes

Who it is for: fully cured walls and trim that were painted at least a few weeks ago.

These are the workhorses. Match the width to the job: 1 inch for trim and small edges, 2 inches for ceilings and baseboards.

Delicate-surface tapes

Who it is for: walls painted in the last couple of weeks, wallpaper and delicate finishes.

Lower-tack tapes are designed to lift less. They are worth buying whenever you are taping over paint that has not fully cured.

Masking film and dispensers

Who it is for: windows, cabinets, appliances and anything you want to cover rather than outline.

Pre-taped film covers large areas in one pass, and a dispenser feeds tape and film together.

Edge helpers

Who it is for: people who want a straighter edge without relying only on tape.

Some painters skip tape and cut in freehand with a good brush or edging pad. Both approaches work; practice on scrap first.

FAQ

How do I stop paint bleeding under tape?
Press the edge down firmly with a putty knife or your fingernail, and if you want extra insurance, brush a thin coat of the wall color along the tape edge first so any bleed is the same color.
When should I remove painter's tape?
Many painters pull it while the last coat is still slightly wet or after it is just dry to the touch, at a shallow angle. Waiting until the paint has hardened can peel paint with the tape.
Can I use painter's tape on freshly painted walls?
Wait until the paint is dry enough per the can, and use a delicate-surface tape. Test a hidden spot first.
How wide a tape should I buy?
1-inch for narrow trim and detail work, 1.5 to 2 inches for general masking. Wider tape is easier to line up on long edges.
Does tape work on textured walls?
It is harder to get sharp lines on texture because paint can seep into the valleys. Press firmly, use tape designed for textured surfaces if you can, and consider cutting in by brush instead.
