Paint tools

Two calculators for a decision you make before you buy paint: which other-brand color is closest on screen, and how many gallons the room needs. Neither one publishes a price.

Closest match in other brands

Enter a brand color name, a code, or a hex value. The finder ranks colors from the other brands already in this set by CIEDE2000, using CIELAB values computed from the stored hex. It shows the delta E. Screen colors are approximate. Check a physical sample.

How much paint do I need?

Enter the room, the doors and windows, and the coats. Coverage starts at 350 square feet per gallon, the low end of a range two manufacturers print, and you can replace it with the figure on your can. The result is gallons and quarts. A cost appears only if you type a price.

The written versions of the same ideas are the quantity guide and the methodology. Ordering a sample is separate: how to order a paint sample.

Questions

What colors can the match finder compare?
Only colors already stored from Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr color pages. It does not add colors. A nearest result is a CIEDE2000 distance between published hex values, not an official match.
Where does the paint calculator coverage number come from?
The field starts at 350 square feet per gallon, the low end of the 350 to 400 range on the Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint Interior Latex Semi-Gloss A88 data sheet and the PPG Ultra-Hide Zero Interior data sheet. You can replace it. Door and window sizes are yours to enter.
Do these tools show prices?
No price is published. The quantity calculator shows a cost only after you enter a price per gallon. Sample and supply links use the same product notes as the rest of the site.
