Painting before the holidays: how long paint takes to cure
Three clocks, then a calendar
Paint does not finish when it stops looking wet. Dry time versus cure time separates the three clocks: dry to the touch, dry to recoat, and cured hard enough to wash or to put back into service. This page applies those clocks to hosting. The color choice, if you are still making it, is in paint colors for holiday hosting.
Every time below is from that product's data sheet or from the product page that prints the same figures. The sheets state a temperature and a humidity. A colder or damper room takes longer. The calendar math further down is our arithmetic from those intervals and from the holiday dates the publishers list. It is not a deadline printed on the can.

Emerald's matte wall paint and Emerald's urethane trim enamel both list a 4 hour recoat, and only the wall sheet is silent on cure. Do not copy the trim enamel's recoat onto Advance, or Advance's 16 hours onto a wall latex. The can you open is the sheet that counts.
Benjamin Moore also publishes a longer general wait
Regal Select's eggshell sheet says walls can be washed after two weeks. A separate Benjamin Moore article on freshly painted walls and cabinets is broader, and it is slower. It says that for most walls, paint is typically dry within one to two hours, the space can be used lightly after 24 hours, and the paint will not be fully cured for about 30 days. It says cabinet paint is often dry to the touch in two to four hours, that cabinets should not be used for at least two to three days, and that they will be fully cured in approximately 30 days. On cleaning, it says to wait until the paint is fully cured and, at minimum, to allow 30 days. If you must spot-clean sooner, it says to do it very carefully.
When the sheet for your can and that general article disagree, follow the sheet for the product and use the longer wait if you are unsure. Washing technique, once the wait is over, is in how to wash painted walls.
The 2026 dates those publishers actually list
Amazon Shipping's peak page for shippers lists Thanksgiving as 26 November 2026, Christmas Eve as 24 December, Christmas Day as 25 December, New Year's Eve as 31 December and New Year's Day as 1 January 2027. USPS's 2026 holiday shipping page names Christmas as December 25, Hanukkah as December 4 through December 12, and Kwanzaa as December 26 through January 1. USPS notes that Hanukkah is earlier this year. Thanksgiving in 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26, which matches the date on the Amazon Shipping page.

Those four rows are calendar arithmetic from the intervals above. They assume the temperature and humidity the sheet names. They move later if the room is cold or damp, because the manufacturers say those conditions lengthen the times. This page was checked on October 30, 2026. The October 27 date for a 30-day cure before Thanksgiving is already past. A coat applied on October 30 reaches 30 days on November 29, which is after Thanksgiving and before the December holidays. Nothing here is a sale, a shipping promise, or a reason to skip the label on the can.
Shipping cutoffs that are published, and the one that is not a shopper deadline
If you are mailing a package yourself for expected delivery before December 25, USPS recommends these send-by dates for the contiguous United States: Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail on Thursday, December 17; Priority Mail on Friday, December 18; Priority Mail Express on Saturday, December 19. USPS says the actual delivery date may vary with origin, destination, acceptance time and other conditions. Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, territories, military mail and international mail have different dates on the same page. USPS also says Hanukkah is earlier, so those Christmas send-by dates are late for a gift that needs to arrive by December 4.
Amazon Shipping, the shipper service at shipping.amazon.com, says shipments planned for delivery in time for Christmas Day should be scheduled for pickup on or before December 17, 2026. That sentence is a pickup cutoff for Amazon Shipping accounts. It is not an order-by date for someone buying a roller on amazon.com. For an amazon.com order, the date that applies is the delivery estimate shown at checkout for that item and that address. This page does not print a shopper deadline Amazon has not printed.
Cold rooms, tape and trim
Do not start a coat below the minimum on the sheet. For the products in the table, that minimum is 50°F for Regal Select, Emerald matte, Emerald urethane trim enamel, Advance and the Behr Dynasty usage block, and 35°F for the Zinsser primer, which also caps relative humidity at 85%. Outdoor work has its own limits: when it is too cold or humid to paint outside.
Pull tape on the schedule the roll describes, which is not the same as the cure time. When to remove painter’s tape compares the two brands' instructions. A lower-tack tape is the one made for paint that is still new. Trim and doors that guests touch are a different product from wall paint: Advance's 16 hour recoat and its 5 to 7 day service wait are the figures to plan around if that is the can you bought.

- How long before Thanksgiving 2026 should I finish painting?
- Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. For Benjamin Moore Regal Select eggshell, the sheet says walls can be washed after two weeks, which puts the last coat on November 12 if you want that milestone before Thanksgiving, at 77°F and 50% humidity. Behr Dynasty’s published usage block says the cured film may be cleaned after 1 week, which is a last coat by November 19 on the same assumption. A 30-day cure counted back from November 26 lands on October 27, which is before this page was checked.
- When can guests touch or wipe a freshly painted wall?
- Dry to the touch is about an hour for the wall paints in the table, and Benjamin Moore’s general article says a room can be used lightly after 24 hours. Washing is later. Regal Select eggshell says two weeks. The Behr Dynasty usage block says one week. The general Benjamin Moore article says about 30 days and at least 30 days before cleaning. Follow the sheet for your can.
- How long do painted cabinets need before a holiday meal?
- Benjamin Moore Advance satin lists 4 to 6 hours to the touch, 16 hours to recoat, at least 5 to 7 days before shelves and tabletops go back into service, and up to 30 days to reach optimum hardness. The general Benjamin Moore article says cabinet paint is often dry to the touch in two to four hours, should not be used for at least two to three days, and is fully cured in approximately 30 days. Use the Advance sheet if Advance is the product, and the longer figure if you are unsure.
- Is December 17 the last day to order paint supplies on Amazon?
- No. December 17, 2026 is the pickup cutoff Amazon Shipping publishes for its shipper accounts, for shipments it plans to deliver by Christmas Day, and it is also USPS’s recommended send-by date for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail in the contiguous United States. An amazon.com order uses the delivery date shown at checkout for your address. This page does not add an order deadline Amazon has not published.
